Welcome

The formation of Nea Vassileiada Afternoon Greek School in 1992 launched a vision of building a new Greek Orthodox Church in West Houston. St. Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church was chartered in 1993.

With the help of a few generous families, the parish purchased 4.3 acres of land at 915 Eldridge Parkway on which to build a permanent sanctuary. In 1998, that land was swapped for 7 acres across the street and construction began on the George J. Kostas Education Center. The first liturgy in the new building was held on Christmas Eve, 1999. Through some difficult times, and by God’s grace, the dedicated members of St. Basil’s continued towards their vision of building a permanent sanctuary. Several fundraising campaigns, including “Let’s Get Cookin,” “Let’s Get Committed,” and “Bridging the Gap,” helped reduce the 2001 debt of $ 2.2 million to $895,000 by the end of 2006.

On January 21, 2007, after numerous town hall meetings and an exhaustive needs assessment, the Parish Assembly unanimously approved the schematics for a permanent sanctuary as well as a chapel, administration building, and bell tower. With over $2.47 million raised in new donations, we truly are Building our Vision…Now!
